Profile
Dominika Kurek-Chomycz is Associate Professor of New Testament at the Clough School of Theology and Ministry. She is also an honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Biblical Studies at the University of Manchester, UK, and at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. A native of Krak贸w, Poland, she began her academic education at Warsaw University, specializing in Classics and Early Christianity. She subsequently completed two MAs, PhD, canonical degrees (STB, STL, and STD), and held a postdoctoral position at KU Leuven. Before coming to Boston College, she was Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at Liverpool Hope University, UK. She has also taught candidates for permanent diaconate for the Northern Diaconal Formation Partnership, UK, as well as offering talks and workshops as part of priestly and lay Catholic formation.
Her research revolves mainly around the New Testament and other early Christian writings, with a particular focus on the Corinthian correspondence and its history of reception. In her PhD, she examined the olfactory imagery in 2 Cor 2:14-17, and the motif of scent in ancient Jewish literature more generally. Her subsequent projects have included the history of interpretation of 2 Cor 5:17 and the Pauline notion of 鈥渘ew creation鈥� in patristic writings, translatability and the function of emotions in different literary genres and cultural contexts, among others how the Hebrew terms denoting emotions attributed to God are rendered in the Septuagint, as well as leadership and disability in early Christianity. She has also published on women and gender in biblical interpretation; textual criticism; intellectual disability; and the use of material evidence in the interpretation of the New Testament.
Beyond research and teaching, Professor Kurek-Chomycz has a strong record of academic leadership and service to the profession, including her role as Executive Officer of the European Association of Biblical Studies (2016-2019), the largest learned society of biblical scholars in Europe.
